VOCAL ON PARLIAMENT HILL

SEVERAL HUNDRED PEOPLE GATHERED ON PARLIAMENT HILL SATURDAY FOR THE FIRST EVER RALLY TO DRAW ATTENTION TO THE GROWING PROBLEM OF LYME DISEASE. CANADIANS ARE JUST AWAKENING TO THE FACT TICK BITES CAN CAUSE A MYRIAD OF HEALTH PROBLEMS, THAT,  IF NOT QUICKLY DIAGNOSED AND TREATED, CAN LEAD TO LIFE LONG CHRONIC AILMENTS.     ACCORDING TO LYME ACTIVISTS THE PROBLEM IS CONVINCING DOCTORS AND GOVERNMENTS MUCH MORE ACTION IS NEEDED; NOT ONLY TO PREVENT THE SPREAD OF THE DISEASE, BUT TO FUND MORE RESEARCH THAT WILL LEAD TO TREATMENT AND A POSSIBLE CURE.    VOCAL STANDS FOR VOICES OF CANADIANS ABOUT LYME DISEASE.   THE GROUP IS PARTICULARLY UPSET WITH THE RECENT FEDERAL GOVERNMENT ANNOUNCEMENT OF 4 MILLION DOLLARS TO ESTABLISH A LYME DISEASE RESEARCH NETWORK THAT WILL GENERATE NEW KNOWLEDGE TO IMPROVE DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT.  THEY CALL THAT A DROP IN THE BUCKET, THAT WILL DO LITTLE TO HELP THE THOUSANDS OF CANADIANS NOW SUFFERING WITH CHRONIC LYME DISEASE.

I ACTED AS EMCEE AT THE RALLY, AND WAS ABLE TO VIDEOTAPE SOME OF THE SPEAKERS.

AFTER LEAVING THE RALLY I RAN INTO A COUPLE WHO HAD BEEN PART OF THE VOCAL EVENT.  WHILE CHATTING I LEARNED THEY BOTH HAD LYME, AND ARE CONVINCED ONE OF THEM TRANSMITTED THE DISEASE TO THE OTHER.   LYME ACTIVISTS ARE ATTEMPTING TO GET THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY TO INVESTIGATE ALTERNATIVE METHODS OF TRANSMISSION, THROUGH BLOOD, SEXUAL ACTIVITY AND IN UTERO.
