Canadian Centre for Mental Health and Sport

Competitive athletes and coaches will soon be able to access mental health care at a dedicated Centre in Ottawa.   The Canadian Centre for Mental Health in Sport is opening next month – aproject driven by two women who know first hand how debilitating depression and stress can be on those who compete.

Ontario Sex Education- Sue McGarvie

ONE OF THE EXPERTS WHO WORKED TO REVISE ONTARIO'S NEW SEX EDUCATION CURRICULUM IS ANGRY AND FRUSTRATED THE  FORD GOVERNMENT HAS SCRAPPED IT.

SUE MCGARVIE IS A SEX AND RELATIONSHIP THERAPIST IN OTTAWA.   SHE WAS ONE OF MANY WHO WORKED TO BRING THE OLD SEX ED CURRICULUM INTO THE 21ST CENTURY.

THE NEW GOVERNMENT PROMISES TO STUDY THE ISSUE AND INTRODUCE A PROGRAM THAT EVERYONE CAN GET BEHIND.   McGARVIE SAYS THAT'S TOTALLY UNNECESSARY;  THE GOVERNMENT CAVED TO A SMALL VOCAL MINORITY.    I SPOKE WITH SUE McGARVIE TODAY.

WHAT FOR A FULL INTERVIEW WITH SUE McGARVIE ON @COFFEEWITHOTTAWA IN AUGUST.

WOMEN WINE AND WISDOM

WOMEN ARE AMAZING, RESILIENT, AND BRAVE.  THE WET OTTAWA BOARD OF TRADE IS ON A MISSION TO INSPIRE ALL WOMEN IN OUR COMMUNITY TO KNOW THEIR TRUE WORTH. THAT'S WHY THEY RECENTLY SPONSORED AN EVENING CALLED WOMEN, WINE AND WISDOM.  I WAS HONOURED TO BE ASKED TO JOIN TWO OTHER PANELISTS TO SHARE OUR LIFE STORIES IN THE HOPE IT WOULD INSPIRE OTHERS.    PICTURED HERE, ANDREA BAPTISTE, AN ENGINEER. SENIOR EXECUTIVE AND ENTREPRENEUR  WHO IS MAKING HER MARK IN TECH.  SHE IS CURRENTLY LAUNCHING A NEW BUSINESS  CALLED PROTONIFY.

AND DR. THAIS COUTINHO, CARDIOLOGIST AND THE FIRST WOMEN DIVISION HEAD OF THE PREVENTION AND REHABILITATION UNIT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF OTTAWA HEART INSTITUTE.

BELL HIGH SCHOOL PROM POP-UP

AS WE HEAD INTO JUNE GRADE 12 STUDENTS ARE TURNING THEIR ATTENTION TO AN IMPORTANT RITE OF PASSAGE.   THE SCHOOL PROM.   WHILE IT'S EXCITING, IT CAN ALSO MEAN WORRY AND DISAPPOINTMENT, ESPECIALLY FOR TEENS WHO DON'T HAVE HUNDREDS OF DOLLARS TO SPEND ON GOWNS AND SUITS.

AT BELL HIGH SCHOOL IN OTTAWA'S WEST END A DEDICATED TEACHER RECOGNIZED THE NEED TO MAKE PROM MORE AFFORDABLE.   I MET WITH KAREN KURLICKI AND HER BAND OF VOLUNTEERS TO SEE HOW THEY MAKE PROM WISHES COME TRUE.

ONCE THE PROM POP UP IS OVER, KAREN AND HER VOLUNTEERS FACE A HUGE CHALLENGE OF STORING THE LEFTOVER GOWNS.  IF ANYONE HAS A NICE, CLEAN AND PROPER PLACE TO SAFELY KEEP THE GOWNS AND DRESSES UNTIL NEXT SPRING, PLEASE LET ME KNOW.

LISA MacLEOD CAMPAIGN KICKOFF 2018

LISA MacLEOD LAUNCHED HER CAMPAIGN FOR RE-ELECTION PROMISING TO RUN A GRASSROOTS EFFORT- ONE THAT'S INCLUSIVE OF ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY.

MacLEOD HAS BEEN THE CONSERVATIVE MPP FOR NEPEAN-CARLETON SINCE 2006.   THIS ELECTION THE RIDING HAS BEEN SPLIT IN TWO.  SHE HOPES VOTERS IN NEPEAN WILL SEND HER BACK TO QUEENS PARK, AS PART OF A CONSERVATIVE SWEEP OF THE PROVINCE.

I CO-EMCEED THE CAMPAIGN LAUNCH TODAY WITH KURT STOODLEY.   MORE THAN 400 LISA MacLEOD SUPPORTERS SHOWED UP TO HELP THEIR CANDIDATE KICK OFF HER CAMPAIGN.  HERE'S A PORTION OF HER ADDRESS.

THE ONTARIO ELECTION IS JUNE 7TH.

VOCAL 2018

THE VOCAL 2018 ANNUAL INFORMATION SESSION WAS HELD AT OTTAWA CITY HALL ON MAY 5TH.  VOCAL STANDS FOR VOICES OF CANADIANS ABOUT LYME DISEASE.   IT'S PRIMARILY A GROUPS OF VOLUNTEERS, MANY OF WHOM HAVE LYME DISEASE, CONTRACTED THROUGH A TICK BITE.  THE NUMBER OF SUFFERERS IS GROWING, YET THE MEDICAL COMMUNITY IS SLOW TO RECOGNIZE LYME.   VOCAL IS WORKING HARD TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC,  DOCTORS AND PUBLIC OFFICIALS THAT TICKS AND LYME IS A GROWING THREAT.

WE ARE CANADIAN

AN OTTAWA MAN BELIEVES CANADA NEEDS A NATIONAL SONG.    NOT TO REPLACE “OH CANADA”,  BUT ONE THAT CANADIANS WOULD LOVE TO SING WITH GUSTO AND PRIDE.   ELLIS CRAIG HAS WRITTEN ONE CALLED  "WE ARE CANADIAN" AND IS NOW WORKING TO PROMOTE IT.   HE'S A MAN WITH A DREAM, AND WE CAN ALL PLAY A ROLE IN MAKING IT HAPPEN.

carolanneblog@outlook.com    LET ME KNOW IF YOU THINK WE NEED "WE ARE CANADIAN" AS A NATIONAL SONG, OR IF YOU CAN HELP PROMOTE IT.

ELIAS CENTRE.  I WAS HONOURED TO HELP EMCEE.

ONE OF THE FIRST PEOPLE I MET AT THE AWARD CEREMONY WAS JOHN JEROME.  AT 84,  JOHN LIVES AT THE ALTA VISTA RETIREMENT RESIDENCE.  HE ACTIVELY ENGAGES HIS FELLOW RESIDENTS TO ENRICH THEIR LIVES.  HE ALSO VOLUNTEERS AT THE NATIONAL ART GALLERY AND VISITS RESIDENTS IN HOSPITAL OR HOSPICE.  JOHN WAS RECOGNIZED BY THE CONCIL ON AGING FOR HIS DEDICATION TO COMMUNITY.   IN CONVERSATION WITH JOHN I LEARNED OF HIS MISSIONARY WORK AND A MEETING HE HAD WITH MOTHER THERESA THAT HE BELIEVES RESULTED IN A MIRACLE FOR HIS SON.

ORCHARDVIEW ON THE RIDEAU - WOMEN'S DAY

NOVEMBER 4TH WAS WOMEN'S DAY IN MANOTICK, IN SOUTH OTTAWA.   SORT OF LIKE PRE-CHRISTMAS FOR THE ALL THE GALS WHO LIVE AND SHOP IN THE AREA.   MANOTICK BUSINESSES ROLLED OUT THE RED CARPET, THERE WAS ENTERTAINMENT, EVEN A VICTORIAN TEA AT WATSON'S MILL.   NOT EVERYONE HOWEVER, COULD  MAKE IN ONTO MAIN STREET FOR ALL THE GOODIES AND FUN.   THAT'S WHY THE STAFF AT ORCHARDVIEW ON THE RIDEAU IN DOWNTOWN MANOTICK INVITED THE FUN TO COME TO THEM.   I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST VISITORS TO DROP IN SATURDAY MORNING.

2017 TAKE A VETERAN TO DINNER

THE TENTH ANNUAL TAKE A VETERAN TO DINNER EVENT WAS HELD OCT. 22nd AT TUTOR HALL.  THE CONCEPT IS SIMPLE.   PAIR UP VETERANS WITH CIVILIANS AND INVITE THEM TO DINNER.   SOMETIMES THE CIVILIAN IS A FAMILY MEMBER, INCREASINGLY HOWEVER TWO STRANGERS ARE PAIRED.  OVER THE PAST DECADE NEW FRIENDSHIPS HAVE BEEN MADE AND A GREATER UNDERSTANDING OF WHAT OUR VETERANS WERE WILLING TO SACRIFICE, AND WHAT THEY LOST IS FOSTERED.  TAKE A VETERAN TO DINNER IS ALWAYS HELD ABOUT A MONTH BEFORE REMEMBRANCE DAY.   IT WAS MY PLEASURE TO EMCEE THE DINNER AGAIN THIS YEAR.

REBEL PETAL'S REMEMBRANCE WREATHS

AN OTTAWA FLORIST CALLS IT A CAREER HIGHLIGHT.  MICHELLE VANDENBOSH,  OWNER OF REBEL PETAL IN MANOTICK, IN SOUTH OTTAWA,  WAS COMMISSIONED TO CREATE FOUR NEW REMEMBRANCE DAY WREATHS TO GRACE THE HALLS OF PARLIAMENT HILL.   REBEL PETAL MAY BE A SMALL SHOP, BUT MICHELLE'S ARTISTIC CREATIONS ARE KNOWN FOR MAKING BIG STATEMENTS.

CHEF BLACKIE'S NEXT VENTURE

IN OCTOBER THE AUTUMN EVENING FOR AUTISM WAS HELD AT " NEXT", THE POPULAR STITTSVILLE RESTAURANT OWNED AND OPERATED BY CHEF MICHAEL BLACKIE.

THE VENUE IS A HIT BECAUSE THE MENU IS ALWAYS UNIQUE; LOVINGLY CONCOCTED IN THE CHEF'S ARTISTIC HEAD.  THIS YEAR'S MEAL DID NOT DISAPPOINT.

BEFORE THE EVENING BEGAN I HAPPENED TO SPOT CHEF BLACKIE IN HIS OFFICE ON THE LOWER FLOOR OF THE RESTAURANT.   I POPPED MY HEAD IN TO SAY HELLO AND CAUGHT THE CHEF IN THE MIDDLE OF DESIGNING LABELS FOR HIS "NEXT" ADVENTURE.

AMPHIBIOUS CHALLENGE 2017

A REGION OF THE UPPER PONTIAC LOCALS REFER TO AS "GOD"S COUNTRY", WAS THE SCENE OF THE SECOND ANNUAL AMPHIBIOUS CHALLENGE IN EARLY SEPTEMBER.   THE OTTAWA RIVER, THE ISLANDS, BEACHES AND NEARBY MOUNTAINS ARE RELATIVELY UNTOUCHED. ITS REMOTENESS HAS HELPED KEEP THE SHEENBORO, QUEBEC AREA A BIT OF A SECRET.  THAT'S CHANGING.  IT'S BEING PUT ON THE INTERNATIONAL MAP IN LARGE PART BECAUSE OF A RUN-SWIM RACE GAINING POPULARITY AROUND THE WORLD.

THE EVENT WAS INTRODUCED TO THE SHEENBORO, QUEBEC AREA LAST YEAR BY SIMON DONATO, THE HOST AND CREATOR OF ESQUIRE'S BOUNDLESS TV.  AN ENDURANCE ATHLETE WHO LOVES ADVENTURE, SIMON MOVED TO THE AREA A FEW YEARS AGO FROM ALBERTA AND QUICKLY DISCOVERED IT WAS THE PERFECT SPOT FOR ADVENTURE SEEKERS. HE FELL IN LOVE WITH SWIM-RUN AFTER COMPETING IN OTILLO, THE WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS IN 2015.  LAST YEAR WAS THE FIRST AMPHIBIOUS CHALLENGE.  THIS YEAR REGISTRATION FOR THE EVENT MORE THAN DOUBLED.  THE SHEENBORO SWIM-RUN IS NOW A MERIT RACE FOR OTILLO.   IT APPEARS SIMON DONATO IS WELL ON HIS WAY OF ACHIEVING HIS DREAM OF HAVING PEOPLE FALL IN LOVE WITH A NEW SPORT, AND WITH HIS NEW HOME IN THE BEAUTIFUL UPPER PONTIAC.
